Jiaqing gazetteer, “Villages”: the two leaves carrying the heading “Villages under the Guanfu Office” (70 village names, every identifiable one in what is now Yuen Long, Tuen Mun or Lantau)

English

The Jiaqing Xin’an County Gazetteer lists its villages office by office in juan 2, “Radiations of the Territory” part 1, “Villages”. This entry covers the opening two leaves of the “Villages under the Guanfu Office” section — the indigenous Guanfu list: on the upper leaf of page 59 of the scan, the second column from the right carries the heading “Villages under the Guanfu Office” (the scan prints the last character of headings and of some village names in the popular form; this site always writes the traditional 村莊), and the single column of two names to the right of the heading (新圍 and 深水田) belongs to the preceding stretch and is not counted as Guanfu villages, exactly as was done for the names standing beside the Fuyong Hakka heading in batch M6. The heading also confirms the inference batches M4 and M5 drew back from the “Hakka villages under the Guanfu Office, appended” section: the leaves on pages 61 and 62 of the scan do belong to the indigenous Guanfu list. After the heading the upper leaf’s right half carries fourteen names (錦田村, 屏山村, 香元圍, 廈尾村, 廈川村, 長岡村, 新隆村, 新圍村, 錫降圍, 錫降村, 東頭村, 屯門村, 西山村 and 輞川村) and its left half eighteen (高莆圍, 英龍圍, 石岡圍, 石湖塘, 圓岡村, 上村村, 合山圍, 東安圍, 墪頭圍, 沙莆圍, 李屋, 西邊圍, 福田村, 青磚圍, 東皋村, 南邊圍, 福安村 and 山背村); several of those names stand under a small-type map name at the head of the column (read as 屏山 and 元萌), and one column carries a small 竹 whose village name could not be confirmed, all transcribed as printed and listed among the gaps. The two leaves thus yield seventy names in all — sixty-eight of the Guanfu list plus the two belonging to the preceding stretch — read as always: one scan page holds two leaves, each leaf is read right half first, and each column downwards. The indigenous Guanfu list runs on across pages 60 to 62 of the scan, so the leaf-by-leaf tally for the whole section (298 villages in the archive) waits on the remaining leaves. Geographically every identifiable name lies in three areas of Hong Kong today: Yuen Long, Ping Shan and Tuen Mun (錦田村, 屏山村, 廈川村, 長岡村, 新隆村, 新圍村, 錫降圍, 錫降村, 東頭村, 西山村, 輞川村, 大井村, 水邊圍, 水邊村, 馬田村, 欖口村, 木橋頭, 大橋村, 山下村, 田心圍, 深涌村, 田寮村, 白沙村, 大塘村, 港頭村, 石步李屋村, 石步林屋村, 東新村, 張屋村, 橫洲村, 沙岡村, 小坑村, 袁家園, 隔田村 and 莆塘下) and Lantau (沙螺灣, 石壁村, 梅窩村 and 牛凹村) — the ground batch M6 pointed to once it had shown that the villages of the western New Territories are not in the Fuyong section. As the site’s rule requires, every name is given “as the scan prints it”: like-named villages exist on both sides of the border (Yuen Long and Shenzhen each have a 白沙村 and a 田心村), so no village is assigned to an office, none is pinned to a modern site and none becomes a statistic — nor is a name equated with a present-day place merely because Yuen Long has a 水邊圍 today. The Chronicles archive sits alongside: it records 298 indigenous and 194 Hakka villages under the Guanfu Office in 1819 (EV-18190000-19), 579 indigenous and 275 Hakka for the whole county (EV-18190000-18), so that 492 of the county’s 854 villages fell to the Guanfu Office, about two-thirds of them inside Hong Kong territory (EV-18190000-34); the archive also states that the office then administered most of the Hong Kong region, Tung Ping Chau excepted (EV-18190000-06/07). It further lists the four market towns inside Hong Kong in 1819, of which Yuen Long market was moved from Tai Kiu Tun market and is today’s Yuen Long old market (EV-18190000-21) — the lower leaf read here carries a 大橋村, and the two may be related, but without further evidence they are merely set side by side and never equated. On Lantau the archive records a Lantau station and a Tung Chung Hau station by 1819 (EV-18190000-33), which can be read alongside the 沙螺灣, 石壁村, 梅窩村 and 牛凹村 of this leaf, again without turning juxtaposition into identification. Names whose glyphs could not be fully confirmed at high magnification (墪頭圍, the village under the small 竹, 蚶蛇鬱, 鱟田村, 鴉柏嶺, 梅窩村, 莆塘下 and 中心巷) are listed among the known gaps on /coverage.
