The “Field allocations” section of juan 2, “Radiations of the Territory” part 1, in the Jiaqing 24 (1819) edition of the Xin’an County Gazetteer, read in full by hand: its opening stands on the left half of the lower leaf of page 51 of the scan (running head read directly as “Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 2, Field allocations”, folio four) and its closing on the right half of the upper leaf of page 52, whose running head already reads “Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 2, Climate”, folio five, the left half carrying the “Climate” section. The text, read character by character (the punctuation is the site’s own; the block print has none): “The county belongs to Guangzhou; under the Han it was Southern Yue, in the Spring and Autumn period Baiyue, and in the Tribute of Yu the last soil of Yangzhou; its allotment is Xingji, its star Qianniu, its earthly branch chou. Huangfu Mi’s Jiwang shiji says: from the eleventh degree of Dou to the seventh degree of Wunü is the allotment Xingji, at the pitch-pipe huangzhong, and is the field of Wu and Yue today. The Tang astronomical treatise: Xingji takes the descending stream of the Milky Way, to which a hundred rivers return, so all that lies from the lower reaches of the southern river to the bend of the southern limit belongs to it, and every state fronting the sea in the south-east is Xingji. The Chunqiu yuanmingbao says: Qianniu flows to Yangzhou and divides into the state of Yue. The Jin and Sui treatises both say Wu and Yue, their branch chou. Cai Yong’s Monthly Ordinances: from the sixth degree of Dou to the third degree of Xunü is the allotment Xingji, the field of Yue. The Jin astronomical treatise: 觀世紀, one degree more of Dou — the sentence the print carries besides; its middle term resembled 觀世紀 at low magnification but could not be confirmed in the first pass, and a further pass on 2026-10-21 read all three characters at high magnification (觀 built from 雚 and 見, 世, and 紀 built from 糹 and 己), so that the sentence is now restored to the quotation. The Ming astronomical treatise: those who spoke of heaven all reckoned the stars from Dou and Niu, whence the name Xingji; from the third degree of Dou to the first degree of Nü is the allotment Xingji. What is taken here to match Guangzhou, which the Guangdong provincial administration governs, is likewise the Ox and Girl division. The older writers measured by gnomon shadow, reckoning one degree at more than two thousand nine hundred and thirty li; the county now lies two hundred and forty li from the prefecture, so that its star is beyond doubt among the Ox and Girl.” Three points were entered as gaps at first and were all read character by character at high magnification in a further pass on 2026-10-21, closing them: (1) the term after “the Jin astronomical treatise” was read as 觀世紀 and is restored to the quotation above; (2) the character 三 in Cai Yong’s “third degree of Xunü” and the 三 in “more than two thousand nine hundred and thirty li” were re-read, the forms being intact with no wear visible in the block print, so the printed 三 stands, neither emended nor restated; (3) the 幅 of 幅幬 in the editorial note is confirmed at high magnification (see the entry for the close of “Territory”). This entry is content read by hand from a public-domain scan: field allocation is the old practice of assigning provinces to the twelve allotments and twenty-eight mansions, and the gazetteer’s text is transcribed as printed, not treated as a scientific statement nor in any way as a statistic; Wunü and Xunü and every set of degrees are transcribed as printed, with no conversion, harmonisation or recalculation. The figure of two hundred and forty li from the county to the prefecture corroborates the closing sentence of the preceding leaf, “from the county town to the prefectural city is two hundred and forty li”, the two distances agreeing. Set beside the Hong Kong Chronicles archive, which among its 36,501 entries carries no entry containing the words “field allocations” — the archive does not record the star fields at all; its earliest Hong Kong material begins with the Tang garrison at Tuen Mun and the Song-period Guanfu salt yard, a different order of record, and no pairing is made.
