Jiaqing 24 (1819) Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 3, “Radiations of the Territory” part 2, section “Products”, opens with “Grain” and begins by borrowing two older books: the Lüshi Chunqiu (“the finest of rice is the black millet of the South Sea”) and Yang Fu’s Nanyi Yiwu Zhi (“the farmers of Jiaozhi plant twice in a year and harvest again in winter”) — that is, the gazetteer cites earlier literature to say that rice in Lingnan cropped twice a year. It then runs through the rice names in a two-level scheme: first by crop (“first crop”, “second crop”), then within each crop by habit (“dry-field rice”, “late rice”, “glutinous rice”), with one further group explicitly called “red rice grain”. Every group closes with the same formula, such as “these are the dry-field rices of the first crop” or “these are the glutinous rices of the second crop”; that formula is legible character by character on the scan and is the firmest structural evidence in this entry. Millet follows (“three sorts of millet, all called su”), then wheat (“three sorts”), and then beans, which the gazetteer files under buckwheat (“the names of buckwheat sorts are beans, in all five colours”). What was not read character by character is stated plainly: the individual rice names are broadly legible on the 2,000 px full-leaf render, but the type is small and the lists are long, so this pass did not verify every character; this site therefore records the classification and the quotations only and does not list the rice names, which wait for a further pass. Set beside the Hong Kong Chronicles archive, whose 1819 entry (EV-18190000-24) notes that the gazetteer records many plants under its grain, vegetable, tea, fruit, flower, grass, tree, bamboo and rattan headings with brief notes on distribution and form, but does not copy out the rice names or the scheme: this entry is the verbatim content of that passage, and since both describe the same section of the same book they cannot serve as second sources for each other.

The upper leaf of page 69 of the scan (2,000 px full-leaf render) carries the juan’s opening line “Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 3”, “Radiations of the Territory 2”, “Products”, with the running head reading “Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 3, Products”; the “Grain” passage fills every column of that half-leaf. On the lower leaf of the same page (same running head, folio two) the right-hand half has already entered the “Vegetables” section. Commons sha1 ad357f97….
