The flower entries in juan 3 (“Radiations of the Earth”, part 2), section “Products”, of the Jiaqing 24 (1819) Xin’an County Gazetteer (read by hand across the two printed blocks of page 71 of the scan; centre columns read directly as “Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 3, Products”, folios five and six; the character “flower” stands alone as the section heading, immediately after the oil-mandarin entry). One: plum — “the Luofu Zhi records: the plum of Guang commandery is often the reverse of the chrysanthemum, and this is what is called ‘the plum that opens first on the ridge’”. Two: ye-seem and jasmine — “both were brought from western lands by foreign traders and planted in the South Sea; people loved their fragrance and vied to plant them. Note: ye-seem was originally called na-xi-ming; a palace woman of the Southern Han, Ye-seem by name, loved to wear this flower, hence the name; it is larger than jasmine and its scent the most powerful”. Three: henna — “a tree five or six feet tall, its branches soft and weak; when it flowers its scent matches ye-seem and jasmine; it too was brought from Daqin and planted in the South Sea, and today the county folk plant it in great numbers”. Four: hibiscus — “its stem and leaves are all like the mulberry’s, glossy and thick; the tree is four or five feet tall; it flowers from the second month and does not stop until midwinter; the flowers are deep red, five-petalled, as large as hollyhock, and on one bush a hundred blooms open in a day”. Five: oleander — “that is the rosebay; it flowers in summer, pale red, one flower with several calyxes, and it lasts into late autumn”. Six: rangoon creeper — “it trails and grows; a trellis is built and it is planted there; it blooms abundantly in summer, a single cluster opening ten or twenty flowers, light and graceful as crab-apple blossom”. Seven: orchid — “the ancestor of fragrance, and the utmost orchid ranks first: its stem branches out on many sides, its leaves grow to three feet, the buds are pointed and the flowers large and many, and often one stem and its shaft bear fifty or more flowers; the colour is yellow with purple spots, the scent very thick, and it is called ‘scent across the mountain’; next is the gong-sun, whose offsets run from each large stem, supported by two small stems like a lord leading his grandsons, and its flowers open from the top downwards; next is the ‘out-of-the-frame white’, also called ‘plain heart’; next the green orchid, its leaves one or two feet long, small and straight, its flowers green-blue, those with white stems ranking first and purple stems next; next the yellow orchid, its leaves longer and somewhat larger, its flowers pale yellow with small red veins; and next the grass orchid” — a single entry that ranks the county’s orchids as utmost orchid, gong-sun, out-of-the-frame white (plain heart), green orchid, yellow orchid and grass orchid, and records a scent name, “scent across the mountain”, that is, the orchid grades of Xin’an in 1819. These are content facts read by hand from a public-domain scan and set beside the archive: the 1819 entry of The Hong Kong Gazetteer (EV-18190000-24) says only that the gazetteer “records many plants in its sections on grains, vegetables, tea, fruit, flowers, grasses, trees, bamboo and vines, with brief notes on distribution and form”, and gives neither individual flower names nor the note that ye-seem’s old name was na-xi-ming and that it took its name from a Southern Han palace woman, nor the sixfold ranking of orchids, so the two cannot serve as each other’s second source; no unread character was filled in from the archive. Gaps stated as they stand: (1) the two characters “utmost orchid” appear in the 1,200 px image with the form “wood + ji”, unlike the common reading “Jian orchid”, and are quoted here as the scan prints them, the point being noted in the handover for a further check; (2) in “next is the gong-sun, whose offsets run from each large stem, supported by two small stems like a lord leading his grandsons” the punctuation follows the sense, the original being unpunctuated; (3) after “and next the grass orchid” the text continues into the printed block of page 72, whose description of the grass orchid has not been read, so the entry stops here; (4) in the hibiscus entry the wording after “five-petalled” is faint in the whole-page image, so the quotation ends at “a hundred blooms open in a day”.
