The last two entries of the fruit section in juan 3 (“Radiations of the Earth”, part 2), section “Products”, of the Jiaqing 24 (1819) Xin’an County Gazetteer (read by hand from the upper printed block of page 71 of the scan; centre column read directly as “Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 3, Products”, folio five). One: the xi-gua — “the pineapple stands a foot or so high; its leaves are long as swords and thorned; it grows upright from the ground, and each plant sets but one fruit; it ripens in summer, its colour yellow-red, its taste very sweet and fragrant; the local people fear it is heating, so they strip off its skin and rub it with salt” — that is the pineapple as it is called today: one fruit to a plant, ripening in summer, peeled and rubbed with salt, all itemised in the gazetteer of 1819. Two: the oil mandarin — “a mountain fruit; its skin is smooth as a pear-tree’s, its colour greenish-yellow, it is as big as a pellet, sweet with a slight bitterness, and the fragrance lingers on the tongue after eating; also called yang-gan” — the fruit now called you-gan-zi (Phyllanthus emblica), whose sweet aftertaste the gazetteer records as “fragrance lingering on the tongue”, with the alternative name yang-gan then in use. These are content facts read by hand from a public-domain scan and set beside the archive: the 1819 entry of The Hong Kong Gazetteer (EV-18190000-24) says only that the gazetteer “records many plants in its sections on grains, vegetables, tea, fruit, flowers, grasses, trees, bamboo and vines, with brief notes on distribution and form”, and gives neither individual fruit names nor form details such as “each plant sets but one fruit”, nor the alternative name yang-gan, so the two cannot serve as each other’s second source; no unread character was filled in from the archive. Gaps stated as they stand: (1) the head character “xi” of xi-gua and the head character “you” of you-gan-zi were read only in the 1,200–1,500 px images (the forms are clear but were not enlarged further), while every other clause was checked character by character in 1,300–1,900 px single-column images; (2) the four characters “rub it with salt” rest on the 1,200–1,500 px images only, the 1,900 px column stopping at “strip off its skin”, and are listed for the next round; (3) immediately after the oil mandarin stands a single-character column, “flower”, the section heading for the flower entries, which have their own entry.

Both stand in the upper printed block of page 71 of the scan: the centre column was read directly as “Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 3, Products”, folio five; the xi-gua entry is the first column of that block’s right half, the oil mandarin the column after the sugar-boiling passage in the left half and immediately before the single-character heading “Flowers”. Commons sha1 ad357f97…. The scan has no usable text layer, so its content is read by hand: a 1,200 px whole-page image (/private/tmp/jq/W71-71.png) was used to locate the columns, then each column was enlarged and checked — the headword “xi-gua” and “the pineapple stands a foot or so high” at 1,500 px (H3-71.png), “thorned, it grows upright from the ground and each plant sets but one fruit” and “yellow-red, its taste very sweet and fragrant, the local people fear it is heating” at 1,900 px (FA1-71.png), “the poison is in its skin” at 1,900 px (H4-71.png), “the oil mandarin… a mountain fruit, its skin” at 1,300 px (H7-71.png), “smooth as a pear-tree’s, greenish-yellow, as big as a pellet, sweet with a slight bitterness” and “the tongue, also called yang-gan” at 1,900 px (G1-71.png), “a slight bitterness, the fragrance lingers after eating” at 1,500 px (H6-71.png).
