English

The continuation of the flower section in juan 3 (“Radiations of the Earth”, part 2), section “Products”, of the Jiaqing 24 (1819) Xin’an County Gazetteer, read by hand from the upper printed block of page 72 of the scan (centre column read directly as “Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 3, Products”, folio seven). One: the closing judgement on the orchid — “those with short leaves and white stems are the best, and there is a distinction between double-flowered and single-flowered kinds” — which closes the orchid entries of the preceding page. Two: the New Year orchid, “it opens at the start of spring and on New Year’s Day”, so named because it flowers with the first month. Three: the wind orchid, “the flower is drawn out from the heart of the leaves, in pairs, and hangs under the eaves; it takes no water and yet grows of itself” — an air plant. Four: 茂, “also called the hanging orchid”. Five: the tree orchid, “a zhang or so tall, its flowers like fish roe and stronger in scent than those, but it cannot cross the ranges”. Six: the pearl orchid — “the Guangzhou Gazetteer says: the late orchid is like pearls, like golden millet, several strings on one branch” — and its last clause, “from Siam, also called the chicken-claw orchid”, that is the plant still known by that name today, which reached Xin’an from Siam by 1819. Seven: the chrysanthemum, “it blooms abundantly in autumn, but in Lingnan it only opens in winter”, quoted with Su Shi’s line that “where there is chrysanthemum in Lingnan, it is the Double Ninth”, and explained: “the chrysanthemum grows the stronger for frost, and in Lingnan there is seldom any real frost until the end of winter”, its colours “red, white, yellow and rouge, of several sorts”. Eight: the bell-flower, “a tree several feet tall, its branches crooked and sprawling; in the first month it makes flowers before leaves, dozens of little bells strung on one branch, crystal-like as jade and flecked with red — very plentiful on Beidu Mountain in this county”; Beidu Mountain is Castle Peak above Tuen Mun, and this is the only place the gazetteer gives for the plant. Nine: the horse-tassel flower, “red as a horse’s tassel, its flowers hanging in a single string of a thousand blooms, the tree a zhang or so tall, some white, some peach-red, and the scarlet with a bordered edge is the rarest sort”. Ten: nine-li scent, “a woody plant, its leaves fine as box, growing in clumps, the flowers white and very strong in fragrance”; and seven-li scent, “small leaves and larger tips, the trees are none of them tall, and can be kept in pots”. Eleven: the garden balsam, “also called the golden phoenix flower, in several colours, red, white, purple and green-blue; women take the red ones, pound the juice and dye their nails, and the seed is used in medicine under the name ji-xing-zi (jumping-seed)” — the plant still called nail-flower, with the same drug name today. This entry records content read by hand from the public-domain scan, set side by side with the gazetteer register: the Hong Kong Chronicles register has a single 1819 entry (EV-18190000-24), which describes the gazetteer only in general terms as “recording a variety of plants” with brief notices; it gives no individual flower names, no Siam provenance and no Beidu Mountain locality, so it cannot be used as a second source, and this entry borrows no unverified character from it. Gaps stated honestly: (1) the head character of the hanging-orchid entry, 茂, was checked on a 560 px single-column detail and is a grass radical over 戊, not 苑 or 蕨; the name is rare in flower catalogues, so the gazetteer text is transcribed only, without interpretation. (2) The sentence break after “several strings on one branch” in the pearl-orchid entry is the editor’s; the woodblock has no punctuation. (3) The two characters 臙脂 were read on a 1,100 px detail and not re-checked at higher magnification. (4) Every item gives only a name, form, scent or use, with no date or person, so no chronology is inferred.

Everything stands in the upper printed block of page 72 of the scan, whose centre column was read directly as “Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 3, Products”, folio seven; the opening clause occupies the column nearest the centre on the right, the closing one the outermost column of the left half. Commons sha1 ad357f97…. The scan has no usable text layer, so the content was read by hand: a 1,200 px full-page image (W72-72.png) for orientation, then three 1,100 px details column by column — right half (U1-72.png: end of the orchid, New Year orchid, wind orchid, 茂, tree orchid, pearl orchid), middle (U2-72.png: chrysanthemum, bell-flower), left half (U3-72.png: horse-tassel flower, nine-li scent, seven-li scent, garden balsam); the one doubtful head character was enlarged to 560 px in a single column (MZ2-72.png) and confirmed as 茂, a grass radical over 戊.
