English
The opening of the grasses section in juan 3 (“Radiations of the Earth”, part 2), section “Products”, of the Jiaqing 24 (1819) Xin’an County Gazetteer, read by hand from the lower printed block of page 72 of the scan (centre column read directly as “Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 3, Products”, folio eight; the single-character heading “grasses” stands between the closing clause of the pomegranate entry and the red-goose weed). One: red-goose weed, “at its best when the geese come, also called the old-and-young man”. Two: cactus, “its stems green and tender, flat and thick, with thorns; households plant it on wall tops to ward off fire; its sap, getting into the eye, blinds a person” — a fire charm and, unusually for the gazetteer, a safety warning. Three: indigo, “its leaves small, sown in the second month and gathered in the fifth, and the people of the county turn it into indigo dye” — a real dye crop of 1819 Xin’an. Four: san-lai, “its root like ginger but soft and crisp, hot in nature and good for the digestion, also called sand ginger”. Five: fresh cardamom, “much planted for its scent”. Six: cocklebur, “commonly called chi-tou”, and noted as “able to cure sores and poisoning”. Seven: the houseleek, “also called aloe, shaped like a narcissus, each leaf a finger thick, its flower opening like a jade hairpin, growing from the root, a foot or more long; the leaves hold a paste, and women take it to gloss their hair”. This entry records content read by hand from the public-domain scan, set side by side with the gazetteer register: the Hong Kong Chronicles register has a single 1819 entry (EV-18190000-24), which describes the gazetteer only in general terms as “recording a variety of plants and products” with brief notices; it gives no individual grass names, no indigo-dye economy and none of these alternative names, so it cannot be used as a second source, and this entry borrows no unverified character from it. Gaps stated honestly: (1) one character stands between “commonly called chi-tou” and “able to cure sores” in the cocklebur entry (its shape is close to 名); at 1,100 px it could not be settled, so it is not quoted. (2) The rest of the fresh-cardamom entry was settled in a later batch from the left half of the same page at 900–1,100 px: “much planted for its scent — it is probably du-ruo, not the cardamom of the materia medica”, the compilers taking the plant to be du-ruo rather than the medicinal cardamom. The gap is closed; the body of this entry still quotes only the first clause. (3) The second character of the entry name san-lai and the two characters 蘆薈 in the houseleek entry were read at 1,100 px and not re-checked. (4) The tree section (banyan, kapok, incense tree) has since been read in later batches (see gazetteer-jiaqing-banyan-and-kapok and gazetteer-jiaqing-incense-tree); this entry does not repeat it. (5) Every item gives only a name, form and use, with no date or person, so no chronology is inferred.
