The continuation of the fruit entries in juan 3 (“Radiations of the Earth”, part 2), section “Products”, of the Jiaqing 24 (1819) Xin’an County Gazetteer (read by hand from the lower leaf of page 70 of the scan, running head “Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 3, Products”, folio four; the lychee, longan and sand-pear entries stand in the upper leaf of the same page and have their own entry). One: the orange — “a tree with white blossom and crimson fruit; its peel is fragrant and it has a fine flavour”. Two: of the citrus kind “there are several sorts, large and small, red and white”. Three: the sweet orange — “also of the citrus kind, sweet and fragrant, refreshing to the teeth; its peel is pungent and warming and can sober a drinker”. Four: the five-ridged fruit — “greenish-yellow, its skin and flesh crisp and soft, its taste very sour, its body five-ridged”; the gazetteer explains that “the county folk call a ridge ‘lian’, hence the name”, notes that it “can dispel gu poison, and when preserved in honey it is sweet-sour and good”, and cites the Yuhang Zhi: “the five-ridged fruit is the wu-lian-zi, also called yang-tao, also called san-lian” — that is, what is now called star fruit. Five: the sweet banana — leaves several feet long, flowers like hibiscus, also called ba-jiao; it cites Su Shi’s line, “when the bananas in the western neighbour’s plot ripen, from time to time he sends over a comb of yellow”, and notes that “cut green and left a few days, they ripen”. Six: the mango — “a tree several zhang tall, flowering very abundantly; bees, seeing it, rejoice, hence the name”; its colour is yellow and its taste sour, and “its sweetness can settle seasickness”. Seven: the longevity fruit — “a tree as tall as a paulownia, fruit like an orange, sweet and fragrant, pleasing”. Eight: the water melon — “green skin, red heart, black seeds, at its best in the fifth month, some as big as a bushel”; cut open and eaten it is “sweet and cooling and dispels summer heat”, and the gazetteer adds that “what a certain village in the county produces is the best; no other place comes up to it”. This is a content fact read by hand off a public-domain scan; the Chronicles archive has only one 1819 entry (EV-18190000-24), which says merely that the gazetteer “records a variety of plants under the categories of grains, vegetables, tea, fruits, flowers, grasses, trees, bamboo and rattans, with brief descriptions of their distribution and morphology” — it lists no fruit, has no note identifying the five-ridged fruit with the star fruit, and no such use as settling seasickness, so neither side can serve as a second source for the other. Stated plainly, three points remain unverified: the two characters of the village name in “what a certain village produces is the best” were confirmed in a later batch, which met the same village name again in the incense-tree entry on page 73 (one of the western producing places) and read it character by character on a 1,000 px narrow detail; where the village lay is still unchecked and therefore unstated; a further entry on the same leaf, “yi-mu-zi” (a fruit like an orange but sour, avoided by pregnant women, also called yi-meng and locally lin-meng), contains characters that are not confirmed, so it is left out of this entry pending a further pass; and the sentence following “fruit like an orange” in the longevity-fruit entry is unconfirmed and therefore not quoted. All three are recorded in HANDOVER.
