The close of the fruit section in juan 3 (“Radiations of the Earth”, part 2), section “Products”, of the Jiaqing 24 (1819) Xin’an County Gazetteer (read by hand from the upper leaf of page 71 of the scan, running head read directly as “Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 3, Products”, folio five; the “Flowers” heading does not appear until later in the same leaf). One: the peanut — “it trails and grows, leaves green, flowers yellow; the flower falls and the fruit sets in the mud (坭); the kernel is white, and fried it is fragrant and pleasing; it is pressed to make oil”, with the note that this is “the widest of profits, also called di-dou”, and another column on the same leaf adding “very plentiful in the county” — that is, by 1819 peanuts were widely planted in Xin’an and pressing them for oil was a major source of gain, “earth bean” being the name then in use. Two: sugar-boiling, which continues the next entry, “sugar cane”, across the centre column — “in winter the juice is pressed and boiled down into sugar: the turbid black sort is called black-slab sugar, the clear yellow sort yellow-slab sugar, and the white fine sort white sugar” — the gazetteer setting black-slab, yellow-slab and white sugar side by side by colour and refinement, a first-hand account of sugar-making in Xin’an in 1819. This is a content fact read by hand from a public-domain scan and set beside the archive: the 1819 entry of The Hong Kong Gazetteer (EV-18190000-24) says only that the gazetteer “records many plants in its sections on grains, vegetables, tea, fruit, flowers, grasses, trees, bamboo and vines, with brief notes on distribution and form”, and gives neither individual crops nor the oil-pressing and sugar-boiling processes, so the two cannot serve as each other’s second source; no unread character was filled in from the archive. Corrections and gaps as they stand: (1) the xi-gua (pineapple) and oil-mandarin entries beside this one now have their own entry and are not repeated here; (2) on 25 October 2026 the peanut entry was re-checked in two 900 px column details (PA-71.png, PB-71.png): the text reads “the fruit sets in the mud”, 坭, earth plus 尼, not 土, while “kernel white”, “fried it is fragrant and pleasing”, “the widest of profits”, “also called di-dou” and “very plentiful in the county” all agree character for character, so “soil” has been corrected to “mud”; (3) the entry that follows the peanut is “sugar cane” (white cane and bamboo cane), whose sugar-boiling passage runs on across the centre column, so the sugar text above is in fact the lower half of that entry, now transcribed separately.
