The “natural calamities” section of juan 13 in the Jiaqing Xin’an County Gazetteer (lower leaf of page 179 of the scan, running head “juan 13, natural calamities”, folio 6) records the events of Jiaqing 12 (1807): a white halo appeared on the seventh day of the second month, and on the tenth and eleventh days or so hail fell around Kowloon and Ho Chung, many head of cattle being struck dead; the same stretch also records that in the ninth year continuous rain made salt dear at twelve dollars a picul, and that in the second month of the tenth year a black vapour ahead of a red one rose from the sea south-west of the city, passed to the north-east, and the whirlwind it brought lifted people on the road more than ten feet, leaving them senseless. This content fact was read by hand from the public-domain scan and sits alongside the Chronicles archive, which itself states that this item is taken from the Jiaqing edition of the Xin’an County Gazetteer: on the tenth and eleventh days of the second lunar month of 1807 hail fell for two days at Kowloon and Ho Chung, killing many cattle (a companion archive entry renders the tenth day as 18 March 1807). The archive’s stated source has thus been checked against the original text, with date, places (Kowloon, Ho Chung) and dead cattle all matching; this site still does not convert the gazetteer’s lunar days into Gregorian dates.
