嘉慶《新安縣志》書前凡例自述編纂背景（掃描本第 14 頁）：「舊志自康熙戊辰年續修後迄今百數十載，應採事蹟甚多，而是書以二閱月而成，闕畧之譏知未能免」；凡例又評舊志「繁無已甚，訛闕尤多，其體例亦未盡善」，故「酌定門類，另為編輯，事增文簡，惟取達意而止」。呢條係人手核讀嘅內容事實，用嚟交代志錄引用嘉慶《新安縣志》時嘅來源性質：康熙戊辰即康熙二十七年（1688）本，1819 年本係之後百餘年嘅補修，亦係現存卷數最完整嘅版本，但編者自認成書倉促。同《香港志》志錄對照：志錄有若干 1819 年前後嘅人口、村落同災異數字都係轉引呢部縣志（例如官富司轄村 492 條、1807 年九龍同蠔涌落雹），本站逐條列明來源，唔會當佢係獨立嘅第二來源。

The preface rules of the Jiaqing gazetteer describe how the book was made (page 14 of the scan): the previous edition had been revised in the wuchen year of Kangxi (1688), more than a century had passed and much material had to be collected, yet the book was completed in two months, so the charge of omission could not be avoided; the same rules call the old edition bloated, full of errors and omissions, and say its categories were re-set and re-edited to be shorter while keeping the sense. This content fact was read by hand and explains the nature of the source when the Chronicles archive cites the Jiaqing gazetteer: the 1688 edition was the one before it, the 1819 edition is the only revision of the following century and the most complete surviving edition, yet its compilers admit the haste. The archive carries several figures around 1819 — population, villages and natural events, such as the 492 villages under the Guanfu Office or the 1807 hail in Kowloon and Ho Chung — drawn from this gazetteer; this site attributes each one and never treats the gazetteer as an independent second source.
