Background
'Ji Qing' ('Passion') appears on Sandy Lam's self-titled 1987 album, released by CBS/Sony on 19 February 1987, with Cantonese lyrics by Richard Lam (林振強) and arrangement by Kwok Siu-lam. Its melody is 'Take My Breath Away', the love theme of the 1986 film Top Gun performed by the American synth-pop band Berlin, written by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock and winner of the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The Hong Kong version keeps the original melody and retains the English chorus line 'Take my breath away', setting Lam's Cantonese lyrics to the rest. It is one of Sandy Lam's representative early covers of Western pop.
