1773 · 鴨脷洲洪聖街(南區)
The Hung Shing Temple on Ap Lei Chau, built c.1773, is declared a monument in 2014.
Memory One of few temples retaining a sea-facing fengshui layout, tied to the local fishing community.
Background Hung Shing is a sea deity traditionally worshipped by fishermen and maritime traders, who asked for protection at sea and safe voyages. On Ap Lei Chau, then a fishing settlement, residents raised this temple around 1773, giving the community a place of worship close to the water. Its sea-facing fengshui layout is now rare among Hong Kong temples and reflects the beliefs of an older fishing community. The Antiquities and Monuments Office recorded its declaration as a monument on 24 October 2014, extending statutory protection to a building closely tied to the island's maritime past.
