1966–1981 (in office)

As of 2026-11-03

John Gilbert Hyndley Baker was the eighth Bishop of the Hong Kong-Macau diocese, in office from 1966 to 1981. The province's official history records that in 1966 he became the first bishop of the diocese elected by its synod and the last British bishop of the diocese, and that he continued the church's tradition of tying its life to education and social welfare. The same page notes that the second, third and fourth women priests he later ordained were the ones formally recognised by the Anglican Communion. The official list of past bishops gives his English name as John Gilbert Hyndley Baker, while the official history gives John Gilbert Baker.

What is not on this page

  • The Chinese occupation and notable works are recorded in Chinese only; this page does not machine-translate them. They appear on the Chinese entry for 白約翰.

  • Directory entries that carry only a name and a title in the official register have no English biography and therefore no English page.
