The job: from dawn trackwork to raceday
A jockey's day starts before dawn: trackwork, barrier trials, and discussions with the trainer about a horse's condition and race strategy. On raceday come weighing out, warming up, studying rivals and draw, then minutes of split-second riding decisions, followed by a debrief with the trainer. Between races come physical training and weight control — being over the weight can affect not only performance but eligibility to ride. The job demands focus, courage and discipline, plus tolerance of injury risk and performance pressure.
The gate: Racing Trainee recruitment
To become a jockey, one normally has to enter the Jockey Club's Racing Trainee Programme. The entry conditions are being aged 15 or above, having completed Secondary 3, being proactive, focused and diligent, and having a strong interest in sport and a wish to join racing. Recruitment runs from June to August and includes screening, a physical fitness test, interviews and a horse-contact test, ending at a selection camp in Huangcun, Guangzhou; only those who perform up to standard become the new intake of Racing Trainees. Accommodation is provided, and trainees receive a monthly salary during training.
From apprentice to jockey
Trainees first become Trainee Apprentice Jockeys and then Apprentice Jockeys, learning riding and stable management under an assigned trainer, with some posted overseas to train and gain race experience. Apprentices must prove themselves in races before they may graduate to fully fledged jockeys. In Hong Kong, licensing is controlled by the Club's Licensing Committee, and the Rules of Racing set out clear conditions for granting a jockey's licence. The path has a high dropout rate and a long training period, yet it is the main route through which Hong Kong has produced several world-class jockeys.
