The “fleet” section of juan 12 (“Coastal Defence”) in the Jiaqing 24 (1819) edition of the Xin’an County Gazetteer (read by hand; its heading stands at the end of the upper half of page 176 of the scan, the text continuing on the lower half) records both the Ming establishment of the Nantou fort and the ships of the Xin’an and Tai Pang camps. For the Ming: the Nantou fort’s old establishment of warships of all sizes was fifty-three, rising step by step from the nineteenth year of Wanli to one hundred and twelve; in the first year of Tianqi it was proposed to detach half its anti-pirate warships — thirty-three — to the Xiangshan fort, leaving seventy-nine warships of all sizes; twelve “Lijie” small fishing boats were then merged into four six-oared boats, leaving seventy-one warships of all sizes; and in the second year of Chongzhen it was formally proposed to lay up the old ships together with the newly built ones, whereupon there remained twelve large ships of the third and fourth rates, twenty-six fast boats of the seventh rate and of fourteen, twelve and six oars, and ten “Lijie” scout fishing boats — forty-eight vessels of all sizes in all, all since withdrawn (as the old gazetteer’s “fleet” section records). For the present dynasty: the Xin’an camp originally had two white-bottomed ke boats and five mast-net boats, besides two large and small three-plank boats and one rowing skiff not on the establishment; as the boats that carried the patrol officers on their annual cruises handled badly, it was proposed to build boats on the Zhejiang warship model, named rice-boats, in three sizes; the camp took delivery of two large and two medium boats and later received one more patrol boat, all manned for arrest work, while its old ke boats together with the mast-net, three-plank and rowing boats, seven in all, were struck off. The Tai Pang camp took delivery of five large and medium rice-boats in the fifty-ninth year of Qianlong and of two dredge-net boats in the twenty-first year of Jiaqing, all manned for arrest work, while its old establishment of four deep-sea ke boats, five river oarsmen’s boats and three fast despatch boats was wholly struck off. This content fact was read by hand from the public-domain scan (ship names and numbers as printed; the characters for “requisitioned”, and the ship names “white-bottomed ke boat”, “mast-net boat”, “rowing skiff” and “dredge-net boat”, are listed for re-checking at higher magnification — see HANDOVER) and set alongside the Chronicles archive. The archive has no entry corresponding to the fleet’s ship numbers; its nearest item is 1563, recording six naval fortresses in Guangdong, four of whose stations within present-day Hong Kong each held more than two hundred troops — the archive counts soldiers where the gazetteer counts ships, so neither can be taken as evidence for the other and this site does not pair them. The gazetteer’s latest item is the two dredge-net boats taken by the Tai Pang camp in the twenty-first year of Jiaqing (1816); the archive separately records, for 1821 (the first year of Daoguang), one company commander and one subaltern with sixteen soldiers at the Tuen Mun station, with sixty further defence troops posted to the stations under it — Mong Tseng, Wang Chau, Kwun Chung, Tsiu Keng, Tai Po Tau and Shing Mun Au — which is later than the gazetteer’s compilation and therefore a subsequent development rather than the same record. Only this stretch of the “fleet” section was seen (the end of the upper half and the lower half of page 176 of the scan); the “coastal-defence topography” section of the same juan is a separate entry.
