English
Jiaqing 24 (1819) Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 3, “Radiations of the Territory” part 2, section “Products”, opens its “Fruit” subsection with the lychee: the tree is “ten feet and more, sometimes thirty or forty feet” tall, with “lush green leaves, green flowers and vermilion fruit”; the fruit is “as large as an egg, its flesh white as fat, sweet and full of juice”, and the gazetteer concludes that it is “the most prized of fruits”, citing a poem by “Su Yuju” (Su Shi) — but this site does not quote that line verbatim, because one character of it could not be confirmed at high magnification in this pass; rather than borrow the character from a modern edition, the line is left out. The entry then names several cultivars and their ripening season; this pass did not verify those names character by character, so this site records only that “there are several cultivars, all ripening in mid-summer” and does not list the names (recorded as a gap). Next comes the longan: “also called dragon’s eye”, its fruit greenish-yellow and round, flesh white, juicy and “sweet as honey”, hanging in clusters like grapes; and the gazetteer notes that “when the lychee is over the longan ripens, whence it is also called the lychee’s slave” — the county record explaining a local nickname by the order of ripening, a first-hand note of the usage of the day. Then the sand pear: leaves like persimmon leaves but larger, flowering in the second and third months and ripening in the eighth and ninth, the fruit as large as a jar or as small as a cup, “white flesh without fibre”, sweet as honey and good for fever; and “there are three sorts, green, yellow and honey pear, and those from Black Rock Cliff are the best” — the gazetteer ranking them by place of origin. Place names and cultivar names are transcribed as printed; which place Black Rock Cliff is today is not stated in this scan, so this site does not map it onto a modern name. Set beside the Hong Kong Chronicles archive: its 1819 entry (EV-18190000-24) says only, in general terms, that the gazetteer records many plants under its fruit and other headings with brief notes on distribution and form, while other entries from the same section treat shellfish, fish and birds item by item (for example EV-18190000-02 on sea urchins, EV-18190000-28 on six birds). This entry supplies the verbatim content of the fruit subsection; the two are different sections of one book and cannot serve as second sources for each other.
