In 1089, Jiang Zhiqi, prefect of Guangzhou, wrote "A Brief Record of Bei Du Mountain", which recounts the legend of the Zen master Bei Du coming south during the Yuanjia era of the Liu Song and explains the origin of the mountain's name.
