In the 33rd year of the Wanli reign of the Ming dynasty (1605), the imperial court, on the grounds of declining numbers of pearl oysters in Guangdong's pearl pools, ordered a halt to official pearl harvesting and forbade private gathering, after which pearl diving in the Hong Kong area gradually declined.
