In June 1842, Pottinger assembled British reinforcements dispatched from India, advanced north again to attack the Yangtze River, successively captured Shanghai and Zhenjiang, thereby cutting off north-south grain transport, and on 4 August led his troops to the outskirts of Nanjing.

On 7 June 1842, the foundation stone of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Hong Kong's first Catholic church, was laid at the junction of present-day Wellington Street and Pottinger Street in Central.
