On 28 December 1851, a serious fire broke out in the Lower Market, burning an area of about 18,000 square metres.

1851年12月28日晚間，上環下市場（今蘇杭街一帶）發生火警。駐港英軍以炸毀樓房的方式阻止火勢蔓延。該場火災導致兩名英兵死亡、二百名華人失蹤，另有四百五十間屋宇被燒毀。
On the night of 28 December 1851, a fire broke out in Lower Market, Sheung Wan (now the Jervois Street area); the British troops stationed in Hong Kong blew up buildings to stop the fire from spreading, and the fire killed two British soldiers, left 200 Chinese missing and destroyed 450 houses.

為阻止火勢蔓延至中環，軍方動用炸藥炸毀建築物以作阻隔，導致458間房屋損毀，另有2名英兵及20名華人喪生，並有60至200名華人下落不明。
To stop the fire from spreading to Central, the military used explosives to demolish buildings as a firebreak, resulting in 458 houses damaged, 2 British soldiers and 20 Chinese killed, and 60 to 200 Chinese unaccounted for.
