1857年1月7日，港府推行一條殖民地社會安寧條例，規定華人在晚上8時至翌日天亮前外出時，須攜帶由警察核發的夜間通行證，該證件俗稱「夜紙」。
On 7 January 1857, the Hong Kong Government introduced an ordinance for the peace of colonial society, requiring Chinese to carry a night pass issued by the police when going out between 8 p.m. and daybreak, commonly known as a "night paper".

1857年1月15日，超過400名歐裔人士進食由裕盛辦館製造的麵包後，發生群體性砒霜中毒事件，港督寶寧夫人亦在其中；因涉事麵包所含砒霜劑量較少，結果無人死亡。
On 15 January 1857, over 400 Europeans fell ill in a mass arsenic poisoning after eating bread made by the Yuk Shing bakery, including the wife of Governor Bowring; as the arsenic dose in the bread was relatively small, no one died.
