From 1 July 1862, the Hong Kong Government ceased using the pound sterling as its accounting currency and adopted the "dollar" as its financial unit, formally implementing the silver standard, under which Hong Kong's silver-standard monetary system lasted 73 years.

On 5 July 1862, the Hong Kong Government legislated on patents, enacting an ordinance whereby an inventor who had already obtained a patent in Britain could apply to the Governor for the same patent right in Hong Kong.
