On 27 September 1907, the Hong Kong Government merged the posts of Assistant Superintendent of Police for the New Territories and Police Magistrate into a District Officer, with Charles McIlvaine Halliday appointed to the post responsible for New Territories affairs, and his office was called the District Office.
