On 2 August 2007, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced that the Hong Kong section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link would be built with a dedicated corridor and dedicated tracks running from the West Kowloon Terminus to the Shenzhen-Hong Kong boundary, shortening the journey time between Hong Kong and Guangzhou.

On 8 August 2007, bar-bending workers went on strike for a pay rise; on the 12th of the same month labour and management reached a consensus, with the daily wage raised to $860 and working hours reduced to eight, ending the 36-day industrial action.
