Under the Country Parks Ordinance, AFCD designates 25 country parks and 22 special areas, totalling about 44,842 hectares or roughly 40% of the land. The four official long-distance trails are the MacLehose Trail, the Lantau Trail, the Hong Kong Trail and the Wilson Trail.
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) runs the official ecological censuses, issuing estimates of wild-animal numbers and recording country parks, marine parks, mangroves and recorded species. All data carry explicit survey methods and years.
