English
Cyd Ho Sau-lan is a Hong Kong pro-democracy politician and social activist who has long advocated for universal suffrage, human rights, and social justice. Ho studied at the University of Waterloo in Canada, where she was exposed to democratic traditions. In the 1998 first LegCo election, she was elected in New Territories East and was later re-elected multiple times for the Hong Kong Island constituency. Ho is a founding member of the Labour Party (December 2011) and currently serves as its vice-chairwoman. She was one of the few legislators in Hong Kong who openly supported same-sex marriage and LGBT rights. In 2012, Ho spearheaded efforts to pass legislation prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and openly supported same-sex marriage and gender identity recognition legislation. Although the proposals were vetoed, her stance sparked widespread discussion on LGBT rights in Hong Kong. Ho also advocated for the rights of disadvantaged communities and marginalised groups. She is regarded as a principled and resilient figure in Hong Kong's pro-democracy camp.
