English

Sir Gordon Wu, born in Hong Kong in 1935 to a family from Huaxian in Guangdong, is the founder of Hopewell Holdings and one of the few Hong Kong businessmen to run property and infrastructure as an engineer. He grew up in Wan Chai and was educated at Dunmei School and Wah Yan College before graduating in civil engineering from Princeton University in 1958. From the late 1970s he bought up old blocks in southern Wan Chai for redevelopment, producing Hopewell Centre — 66 storeys and for a time Hong Kong's tallest building — and Wu Chung House, transforming the district; a third scheme, the Mega Tower Hotel, was delayed for more than a decade by objections over its scale. After reform and opening he was an early investor on the mainland, helping develop the China Hotel in Guangzhou (1984), completing the Shajiao B power station (1987) and the Guangzhou–Shenzhen Expressway (1994), the first expressway in the Pearl River Delta. From the 1980s he championed a cross-sea bridge at Lingdingyang to bind Hong Kong to the delta — a vision realised in the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge, opened in 2018. He was appointed KCMG in 1997, received the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2004, and has chaired the council of City University of Hong Kong.

English

Wu approached property and infrastructure as an engineer, arguing from the 1980s that expressways and a cross-sea bridge should bind Hong Kong to the Pearl River Delta; the Lingdingyang bridge he championed eventually became the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge, opened in 2018.
