Wan Chai sits on the central-northern shore of Hong Kong Island, comprising Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Happy Valley, Tai Hang and So Kon Po. Much of the district is reclaimed land: successive reclamations since the 1850s created the waterfront on which the Convention and Exhibition Centre now stands.

灣仔早年是海旁村落，中文名稱「灣仔」即「小灣」之意。1840 年代跑馬地開始用作賽馬，快活谷馬場是香港首個馬場。掃桿埔設有香港大球場（原名政府大球場）。利東街因婚嫁印刷品店舖集中而被稱為「囍帖街」，2000 年代重建後仍保留節慶元素。灣仔之名原指皇后大道東一帶小海灣。利東街（囍帖街）曾為婚嫁印刷集中地，太原街為玩具街；藍屋、日月星街保留戰前唐樓與小區風貌。大坑火龍源自蓮花宮，為本地非物質文化遺產。

Wan Chai began as a small harbour-side settlement — its name means “little bay”. Happy Valley hosted the first horse racing in the 1840s and remains the city’s turf course. So Kon Po contains the Hong Kong Stadium, the territory’s main football and athletics venue. Lee Tung Avenue was known as “Wedding Card Street” for its printing shops; it was rebuilt in the 2000s but keeps a festive character. Tai Hang began as a fishing village, birthplace of the Mid-Autumn fire dragon dance; the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter once housed a large boat community. The Blue House cluster of tong laus on Stone Nullah Lane charts Wan Chai's passage from fishing village to commercial district. Wan Chai's name refers to the little bay around today's Queen's Road East. Lee Tung Street ("Wedding Card Street") was the hub of wedding-print trades, Tai Yuen Street is famed as Toy Street, and the Blue House and Star Street Precinct preserve pre-war tong lau and old quarter character. The Tai Hang fire dragon, rooted in the Lin Fa Temple, is a Hong Kong intangible cultural heritage.

The Star Street Precinct (Star, Moon, and Sun Streets) gathers a large number of boutique cafes, galleries, and designer brands, making it a great place to find trendy items. Race days at the Happy Valley Racecourse are a major local event.
