離島區覆蓋大嶼山及多個離島，包括東涌、梅窩、大澳、長洲、南丫島、坪洲、喜靈洲及蒲台島等。大嶼山是香港最大島嶼，區內有港島與九龍以外最大的新市鎮發展。

The Islands District covers Lantau Island and numerous outlying islands, including Tung Chung, Mui Wo, Tai O, Cheung Chau, Lamma Island, Peng Chau, Hei Ling Chau and Po Toi. Lantau is the largest island in Hong Kong and hosts the biggest new-town growth outside the urban areas.

大澳有數百年漁村及棚屋歷史，是著名水鄉。梅窩是大嶼山最早的渡輪港口。長洲於 1970 年代起發展為度假勝地，太平清醮（搶包山）是著名傳統節慶。東涌新市鎮自 1990 年代末發展。香港國際機場於 1998 年 7 月 6 日在赤鱲角啟用，是香港航空樞紐。

Tai O has centuries of fishing-village history with its stilt houses, a celebrated water town. Mui Wo was Lantau’s earliest ferry port. Cheung Chau developed as a resort from the 1970s; the Bun Festival with its bun-scrambling is a famous tradition. Tung Chung new town grew from the late 1990s. Hong Kong International Airport opened on Chek Lap Kok on 6 July 1998 and is the territory’s aviation hub.

東涌線及機場快線由東涌及機場往市區；港珠澳大橋（2018 年）由大嶼山連接澳門及珠海。朝跨境公路及昂坪 360 纜車連接昂坪。大嶼山的士及巴士服務各鄉鎮。長洲、南丫島、坪洲及大澳有渡輪往返中環及香港仔。

The Tung Chung Line and Airport Express link Tung Chung and the airport to the urban areas; the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (2018) connects Lantau to Macau and Zhuhai. Ngong Ping 360 cable car serves Ngong Ping. Lantau taxis and buses serve the villages. Cheung Chau, Lamma, Peng Chau and Tai O are served by ferries from Central and Aberdeen.

Tung Chung and the airport form Hong Kong’s international aviation and logistics hub; the airport and the HZMB Hong Kong Port are major economic engines. Disneyland is a tourism anchor. Tai O, Cheung Chau and Lamma rely mainly on tourism and fishing; Lamma also hosts power stations.
