A virologist who trained in mainland China before joining the University of Hong Kong, Guan Yi built one of the world's largest influenza surveillance programmes, tracking H5N1 bird flu across Asia and warning years in advance that a human pandemic from animal viruses was a matter of when, not if. His SARS-CoV and later SARS-CoV-2 work made him a central — at times controversial — figure in pandemic science.
