袁國勇係香港大學微生物學系講座教授。2003年SARS爆發期間，佢同團隊率先分離出SARS冠狀病毒，並溯源到中華菊頭蝠經果子狸傳播，成為全球新發傳染病研究嘅權威。佢長期做蝙蝠病毒監測同新發病源體研究，喺新冠疫情期間係香港抗疫科學界最重要嘅聲音之一，並獲選中國工程院院士。佢堅持以科學同透明面對疫症，被譽為香港「抗疫第一人」之一。

A Hong Kong-trained physician and microbiologist at the University of Hong Kong, Yuen Kwok-yung isolated the SARS coronavirus in 2003 and traced its origin to horseshoe bats via civet cats, becoming one of the world's leading experts on emerging infectious diseases. During COVID-19 he was among Hong Kong's most prominent scientific voices, and his team's bat-virus surveillance has shaped global pandemic preparedness.
