沈祖堯（Joseph Sung Jao-yiu），1959年10月22日在香港出生，祖籍浙江寧波，香港腸胃肝臟科醫生及學者，中國工程院院士、歐亞科學院院士及香港科學院創院院士，並獲頒銀紫荊星章及太平紳士。他1983年在香港大學取得內外全科醫學士學位，1992年在加拿大卡爾加里大學取得生命科學博士學位，1997年在香港中文大學取得醫學博士學位。他1984年加入當時成立不久的威爾斯親王醫院，先後在病理學、內科及腸胃肝臟科任職；1992年回港加入中大醫學院任內科講師，1998年升任內科及藥物治療學系講座教授，1999年出任系主任，2005年起任中大消化疾病研究所主任，2002至2010年間先後任中大醫學院副院長及逸夫書院院長。1995年起，他陸續獲選為愛丁堡、倫敦等地皇家內科醫師學會院士，並於2004年獲裘槎基金會裘槎優秀科研者獎，其後出任何鴻燊防治傳染病研究中心創院主任。2003年沙士疫情期間，他在威爾斯親王醫院帶領醫護抗疫，獲《時代》周刊選為「亞洲英雄」。學術上，他的團隊率先發現一星期的抗生素療程可治癒幽門螺旋菌感染、醫治消化性潰瘍並減低復發，又開創以內視鏡取代手術治療潰瘍出血；他亦曾任亞太地區大腸癌工作小組主席，發表逾一千七百篇科學論文，並在2018至2020年連續三年獲科睿唯安列為「被高度引用研究員」。2010年7月，他出任香港中文大學第七任校長，任內迎接三三四新學制、五所新書院招生，並籌劃香港中文大學（深圳）及中大醫院。2017年底他提早離任，回歸醫療界，2021年起任新加坡南洋理工大學李光前醫學院院長暨高級副校長（健康與生命科學）。他現為中大榮休講座教授。

Joseph Sung Jao-yiu, SBS, JP, was born in Hong Kong on 22 October 1959 to a family from Ningbo, Zhejiang, and is a Hong Kong gastroenterologist and academic, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Eurasian Academy of Sciences and a founding member of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, and a recipient of the Silver Bauhinia Star and a Justice of the Peace. He graduated from the University of Hong Kong with an MBBS in 1983, obtained a PhD in life sciences from the University of Calgary in 1992, and an MD from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1997. He joined the then newly established Prince of Wales Hospital in 1984, working in pathology, medicine and gastroenterology and hepatology, returned to Hong Kong in 1992 as a lecturer in medicine at CUHK, became a professor of medicine and therapeutics in 1998 and head of the department in 1999, and from 2005 directed CUHK's Institute of Digestive Disease; between 2002 and 2010 he served as associate dean of the medical faculty and head of Shaw College. From 1995 he was elected a Fellow of the royal colleges of physicians of Edinburgh and later London, won the Croucher Senior Medical Research Fellowship in 2004, and afterwards became founding director of the Ho Hung-sun Centre for Infection. During the 2003 SARS outbreak he led medical staff at the Prince of Wales Hospital and was named an 'Asian Hero' by Time magazine. In research, his team was among the first to show that a one-week antibiotic course could cure Helicobacter pylori infection, treat peptic ulcers and reduce their recurrence, and pioneered the use of endoscopy in place of surgery for bleeding ulcers; he also chaired the Asia Pacific Working Group on Colorectal Cancer, has published more than 1,700 scientific papers, and was listed by Clarivate as a Highly Cited Researcher for three consecutive years from 2018 to 2020. In July 2010 he became the seventh Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, overseeing the introduction of the 3-3-4 academic structure, the admission of five new colleges, and planning for CUHK (Shenzhen) and the CUHK Medical Centre. Leaving office early at the end of 2017, he returned to medicine and since 2021 has been Dean of the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and Senior Vice President (Health and Life Sciences) at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He is now an emeritus professor of CUHK.
