The job: leading, timing and responding
A hiking guide's core work is risk management: before departure, checking weather forecasts and warnings, studying the route and escape points, and matching gear to the group's ability; en route, controlling pace, scheduling rest and hydration, and watching for heat exhaustion or cramps; and if something happens, knowing how to call for help and give basic first aid. CHKMCU training courses cover map reading, compass navigation, journey-time estimation, hill safety and first-aid principles, plus practical journeys. These are not paper skills but the tools needed for Hong Kong's changeable hills and weather.
The gate: the mountain-craft certificate scheme
The mountain-craft certificate scheme is set by the China Hong Kong Mountaineering and Climbing Union, drawing on local and overseas mountaineering training material, and was accredited in 2019 as a UIAA Mountain Qualification Label programme. Participants start with the Level 1 Mountain Craft Training Certificate and move up: Level 2 requires the Level 1 qualification first, Level 3 goes further, then comes the assistant instructor, and finally the mountain-craft coach. Each level requires set theory and practice and continuous assessment by a coach, and no level can be skipped.
Recognition and the market
Note that mountain-craft certificates and hiking leaders are not statutorily licensed — working without a certificate is not unlawful, but holding one often decides whether you may lead groups, be hired by organisations or obtain suitable insurance. Registered CHKMCU coaches may run courses and issue certificates to participants, and schools, associations and commercial operators usually require the person in charge of a hike to hold at least a Level 1 qualification. This model, where a professional body sets the standard, means recognition depends mainly on the Union's credibility and employers' requirements rather than on a government licence.
