Basic registration requirements
To practise law in Hong Kong as either a solicitor or barrister, you must meet the registration requirements set by the Law Society of Hong Kong or the Hong Kong Bar Association. The key requirement is obtaining the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL) and completing the mandated traineeship or pupillage before you can qualify. Local and non-local law degrees follow different admission pathways, but all must satisfy the same statutory requirements.
Progression and Salary Reference
There is no statutory pay scale for lawyers: pay is set by the market and by each employer. Trainee solicitor packages are decided by the firm, and can differ several times over between large international practices and small local firms, with different bonus and allowance arrangements. Barristers are self-employed and charge per case, so income while building a practice in the first year or two is unstable. This site therefore prints no monthly or annual estimate; when reading an advertisement or agreeing pupillage terms, ask about the base rate, how bonuses are calculated, MPF and the conditions of the traineeship.
Progression runs: trainee solicitor → solicitor → senior associate → consultant or partner, with partner income depending on how the firm shares profits and varying hugely with firm size. A barrister starts as a pupil and, after building a caseload and seniority, may work towards appointment as Senior Counsel.
Becoming a Solicitor and Barrister
Solicitors and barristers are two distinct legal professions in Hong Kong that cannot be practised simultaneously, with very different scopes of work and operating models:
**Solicitors** handle most everyday legal matters, including drafting commercial contracts, property transactions, mergers & acquisitions, and family law cases. They can meet directly with clients and establish law firms. In litigation, solicitors can appear in lower courts (Magistrates' Court, District Court, and some High Court cases), but appeals to the Court of Appeal or Final Court of Appeal generally require representation by a barrister.
**Barristers** are specialist advocacy lawyers who represent clients in all levels of court and provide written legal opinions. They cannot be directly instructed by members of the public — all instructions must come from a solicitor. Barristers must practise as sole practitioners, not in partnerships. They enjoy immunity from civil liability for courtroom advocacy, and their specialist expertise is crucial for complex litigation.
Training requirements differ too: solicitors complete a two-year traineeship, while barristers undergo a one-year pupillage, spending the first six months shadowing their pupil master before handling minor cases independently in the second half.
