實際工作內容
調解員要為雙方安排同主持調解會議，講清程序規則，營造可以坦誠對話嘅環境。會議中要聆聽各方陳述、梳理爭議點、協助交換資訊同探討方案，並喺適當時分開會見各方。若雙方達成共識，調解員會協助把共識整理成和解協議，但唔會替佢哋作決定。個案題材廣泛，家事個案牽涉情緒、子女安排同財務，商業個案則多涉及合約同帳目，所以調解員要因應領域調整技巧。
入行關卡：HKMAAL 認可
香港無強制法例規管誰可以執業，所以入行關卡係行業認可。HKMAAL 認可綜合調解員要求申請人有至少三年全職工作經驗，先完成最少四十小時嘅認可調解訓練課程，再通過至少兩宗模擬個案評估，最後提交認可申請。第二階段須喺完成第一階段後三年內完成，結果亦設有效期。家事調解員要求更高，除咗相關學歷同經驗，仲要完成基本同進階訓練，並喺認可督導下參與兩宗真實家事調解。
家事同其他領域
家事調解員一般要有社會工作、心理學、輔導或法律嘅學位或研究院資歷，加三年家事法或家庭福利／輔導工作經驗，並完成最少四十小時嘅基本家事調解訓練，再喺認可督導下完成兩宗真實家事調解。除家事外，HKMAAL 亦設綜合調解員同大灣區調解員等認可類別。培訓同評審嘅費用由 HKMAAL 訂定，取得認可後可自願列入相關名單，方便法院、機構同公眾選用。

What the work involves
Mediators arrange and chair mediation sessions, explain the ground rules and create an environment for frank discussion. During sessions they listen to each side, clarify the issues, help exchange information and explore options, and may meet the parties separately when useful. If the parties reach agreement, the mediator helps put the consensus into a settlement, but does not decide for them. Case subjects vary widely: family cases involve emotions, child arrangements and finances, while commercial cases often turn on contracts and accounts, so a mediator adjusts technique to the field.
The gate: HKMAAL accreditation
No statute controls who may practise, so the gate is industry accreditation. HKMAAL accreditation as a general mediator requires at least three years' full-time work experience, completion of an approved mediation training course of at least 40 hours, passing at least two simulated case assessments, and a final accreditation application. Stage 2 must be completed within three years of Stage 1, and results have a validity period. Family mediators face higher requirements: relevant qualifications and experience, basic and advanced training, and two live family mediations under an approved supervisor.
Family and other fields
Family mediators normally hold a degree or postgraduate qualification in social work, psychology, counselling or law plus three years' experience in family law or family welfare and counselling, complete at least 40 hours of basic family mediation training, and finish two live family mediations under an approved supervisor. Beyond family work, HKMAAL also offers general and Greater Bay Area mediator accreditation categories. Training and assessment fees are set by HKMAAL, and accredited mediators may opt to be listed so that courts, bodies and the public can find them.
