醫務社工喺醫院協助病人同家屬處理因疾病、創傷或殘疾引起嘅社會同情緒問題，包括輔導、經濟援助、房屋、照顧安排同出院計劃。入行關卡係必須根據《社會工作者註冊條例》註冊為註冊社工，並持有認可社工學歷。

社會工作者註冊局按《社會工作者註冊條例》第17條審議註冊同續期申請，條件包括持有註冊局認可社工學歷、通常居於香港、屬合適及恰當人士、不受紀律制裁命令限制，同就曾否被定罪作出申報。申請人須就曾否被定罪作法定聲明；註冊後如被檢控或被定罪，須盡快書面通知註冊局。已持認可社工學歷者，即使課程已停辦，仍可申請註冊，現時並無期限。
醫務社工主要喺公立醫院嘅醫務社會工作部工作，亦有由社會福利署派駐醫院同非政府機構提供服務嘅人。入職學歷通常係社會工作學位，對應助理社會工作主任職級，主要負責個案工作同小組服務。工作同病房緊密相連，要向醫護解釋病人嘅社會處境，亦要向社區服務單位轉介，所以溝通同危機應變能力好重要。

Medical social services in hospitals include assessing patients' social and psychological situation, providing counselling, formulating admission and discharge plans, mobilising community resources and arranging practical help such as social security applications, compassionate rehousing, home help, purchase of medical appliances and employment support. Medical social workers also plan and run education, support, self-help and therapeutic groups, consult other health professionals on comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation plans, advocate for patients' rights, and develop and carry out research. The aim is to help patients and families cope with the practical and emotional impact of illness and to link them to the services they need.
The Social Workers Registration Board considers applications for registration and renewal under section 17 of the Social Workers Registration Ordinance, taking into account a Board-recognised social work qualification, ordinary residence in Hong Kong, being a fit and proper person, not being subject to a disciplinary order, and a declaration of any convictions. Applicants must make a statutory declaration on convictions; after registration they must notify the Board in writing as soon as practicable if charged or convicted. A person holding a recognised qualification may still apply even if the course has closed, and there is currently no time limit.
Medical social workers mainly work in medical social work departments in public hospitals, with some posted to hospitals by the Social Welfare Department and some serving through NGOs. The entry qualification is usually a social work degree, corresponding to the Assistant Social Work Officer grade, focused on casework and group work. The role is closely tied to the wards: you explain patients' social circumstances to clinical staff and refer to community services, so communication and crisis handling matter greatly, especially when a patient's situation calls for quick and sensitive decisions.
