工作實況：輔導、小組同危機介入
學校社工嘅工作圍繞學生嘅全人發展。個案方面，佢哋會同有情緒、家庭或人際困擾嘅學生傾談，訂立支援計劃，並連結家長同社區資源；小組同活動方面，會設計成長小組、朋輩支援計劃同情緒健康推廣。危機時刻更考功夫：當學生有嚴重情緒困擾、自傷或家庭突變，社工要即時評估風險、安撫同轉介，並聯同老師、教育心理學家同家長協作。佢哋亦協助學校建立識別同支援機制，係校內跨專業團隊嘅重要一員。
關卡：社會工作者註冊條例
註冊係唔可以繞過嘅關卡。《社會工作者註冊條例》規定，任何人要從事社會工作或使用社會工作者名銜，必須註冊為註冊社會工作者。註冊局按條例審議註冊同續期申請，條件包括：持有註冊局認可嘅社工學歷、通常居於香港、屬合適及恰當人士、不受紀律制裁命令限制，並須就曾否被定罪作出法定聲明。註冊須定期續期；若期滿未續期，註冊局會按法例將姓名註銷，該人即不得再使用社工名銜。想做學校社工，除咗註冊，僱主（學校或非政府機構）亦會按其服務經驗同輔導能力篩選。
聘用模式同出路
學校社工嘅僱主可能係學校，亦可能係非政府機構。小學方面，教育局推行一校一社工，學校按校本情況聘用最少一名駐校學位社工；中學方面，社會福利署實行一校兩社工，由非政府機構派駐。晉升方面，可由社會工作助理做起，逐步升任助理社會工作主任、社會工作主任，甚至高級社會工作主任或服務主管；亦可向督導、培訓或學校輔導專業發展。無論走邊條路，持續進修同按時續期註冊都係必須。

The job: counselling, groups and crisis intervention
A school social worker's work centres on students' whole-person development. On cases, they talk with students facing emotional, family or interpersonal difficulties, set support plans and link parents and community resources; on groups and activities, they design growth groups, peer-support programmes and mental health promotion. Crisis moments test them most: when a student faces serious distress, self-harm or sudden family change, the social worker must assess risk immediately, provide reassurance and referral, and collaborate with teachers, educational psychologists and parents. They also help schools build identification and support mechanisms, making them a key member of the school's multidisciplinary team.
The gate: the Social Workers Registration Ordinance
Registration cannot be bypassed. The Social Workers Registration Ordinance provides that anyone who practises social work or uses the title of social worker must be a registered social worker. The Board considers registration and renewal applications under the Ordinance, with conditions including a Board-recognised social work qualification, ordinary residence in Hong Kong, being a fit and proper person, not being subject to a disciplinary order, and a statutory declaration on previous convictions. Registration must be renewed periodically; if it lapses, the Board removes the name from the register by law and the person may no longer use any social worker title. For school social work, employers (schools or NGOs) also screen candidates on service experience and counselling ability.
Employment models and pathways
A school social worker's employer may be a school or an NGO. In primary schools the Education Bureau operates one-school-one-social-worker, with schools employing at least one stationing degree social worker; in secondary schools the Social Welfare Department operates one-school-two-social-workers, with NGO staff stationed in schools. On promotion, a person can start as an assistant social work officer and move up to assistant social work officer, social work officer and even senior social work officer or service head, or develop towards supervision, training or school counselling. Whichever path, continuing education and timely renewal of registration are essential.
