工作內容好視乎場地：住宅樓多數係訪客登記、跟進住戶投訴、夜晚巡樓同睇閘；商場同寫字樓會多啲人群管理、消防通道檢查、失物處理同協助急救；貨倉、地盤就重門禁、出入車輛登記同防盜。幾乎全部崗位都要輪班，最常見係 12 小時一更（日更／夜更），亦有寫字樓行 8 小時三更制。打風、黑雨期間通常要提早返崗或者留守，呢點面試時一定要問清楚。
入行關卡：保安人員許可證
要做保安工作，先要向警務處牌照課申請保安人員許可證；申請前一般要完成認可嘅保安訓練課程（業界俗稱 QAS 課程），內容涵蓋基本保安服務、人群管理、應急處理同相關法例。學歷冇硬性要求，但申請人須符合警務處公布嘅申請資格（包括年齡同背景審查）。許可證有年期，到期要續；冇證而做保安工作屬違法，僱主亦唔可以叫你「返住先、遲啲補牌」。申請文件同費用，以警務處公布為準。
薪酬、工時與晉升
保安員冇法定薪級，薪酬完全由僱主決定，主要睇四樣：場地類型（住宅、商場、甲級寫字樓、政府場地）、更制長短（8 或 12 小時）、日更定夜更、以及係直接聘用定外判。四項加埋，同一個「保安員」職銜嘅人工可以差好遠，所以本站唔寫月薪估算。睇招聘廣告時，要問清楚底薪、夜班同颱風津貼、超時補水嘅計法、強積金同實際更表。晉升路線通常係：保安員 → 保安主管（帶更）→ 保安主任／物業管理主任 → 物業經理或保安經理；想再上一層，多數要補物業管理或設施管理嘅課程同資歷。

What the job actually looks like
The work depends heavily on the venue: residential blocks mean visitor registration, following up complaints, night patrols and gate control; malls and offices add crowd management, fire escape checks, lost property and first aid; warehouses and sites focus on access control, vehicle registration and theft prevention. Almost every post is shift-based, most commonly 12-hour day or night shifts, with some offices on three 8-hour shifts. During typhoons and black rainstorms you may be called in early or asked to stay, so ask about this at the interview.
The gate: Security Personnel Permit
You start by applying to the Police Licensing Office for a Security Personnel Permit, and in practice that means completing a recognised security training course (known in the trade as the QAS course) covering basic guarding, crowd management, emergency response and the relevant legislation. There is no academic requirement, but you must meet the Police's published eligibility conditions, including age and background checks. The permit runs for a fixed term and is renewable. Working as a guard without one is an offence, and an employer cannot ask you to start while your application is pending. Documents and fees are as published by the Police.
Pay, hours and promotion
There is no statutory pay scale: pay is set by the employer and depends on four things — venue type, shift length (8 or 12 hours), day versus night shift, and whether you are hired directly or outsourced. These can make two jobs with the same title pay very differently, which is why this site prints no monthly estimate. When reading an ad, ask about the base rate, night and typhoon allowances, how overtime is calculated, MPF arrangements and the actual roster. Promotion usually runs: guard → supervisor → security officer / property management officer → property or security manager, with further qualifications usually needed for the last step.
