的士司機係自僱色彩最重嘅職業之一：你可以租車做，亦可以自己持有的士牌；收入直接跟接單量、工時同成本掛鈎。入行嘅法定關卡唔係學歷，而係運輸署發出嘅的士司機證，同埋你所持駕駛執照嘅年資要求。

Before a shift you check the car, fuel and cleanliness, then take metered fares, phone or app bookings, and handle electronic payments and receipts — while dealing with traffic, route changes, wheelchairs and bulky luggage. Airports, boundary crossings and designated stands require queuing, and handover time and place must be agreed with your partner driver. Only after rent, fuel, tunnels, insurance and repairs does the day's takings become yours.
To carry passengers for reward in a taxi you must hold a taxi driver identity card issued by the Transport Department and meet its published eligibility conditions, including the class of full driving licence you hold and how long you have held it. Details, documents and fees are as published by the Transport Department, as the requirements are revised from time to time. Carrying passengers for reward without a valid card is an offence with serious penalties, and the vehicle itself needs a valid taxi licence.
There is no official pay scale: earnings depend entirely on trips, hours, rent and fuel. Rented-driver arrangements carry a daily or shift rent, while owner-drivers carry licence value, repairs, insurance and depreciation. Day and night shifts also have different demand and cost patterns. This site therefore prints no monthly figure and instead flags what to subtract: rent, fuel, tunnels, fines and unpaid rest days. Over time you can build a regular customer base, buy a licence and run your own car, or move into fleet management or driver training.
