工作實況：逐項檢驗同簽證
驗車員每個工作天要處理多部車輛，由私家車、輕型貨車到重型車。檢驗過程有既定次序同標準，例如用制動測試儀量度各車輪制動力，確保左右平衡同總制動力達標；用廢氣分析儀檢查排放是否合乎規格；再逐項檢視燈光、輪胎、轉向同車身。發現問題要如實記錄，唔可以為咗讓車主過關而放寬標準，因為車輛安全關乎公眾。檢驗完畢要簽發文件，並保存紀錄以備查核。
關卡：運輸署授權同實務訓練
驗車員唔係自稱就可以做，必須獲運輸署書面授權。按指定車輛測試中心實務守則，認可車輛測試員同負責人要符合指定資歷同經驗，並完成實務訓練同通過能力測驗，中心亦要有指定主管。整個制度建基於《道路交通條例》，運輸署會監察中心運作同檢驗質素。呢種「政府授權、私營執行」嘅模式，令驗車員嘅關卡同公務員職位唔同，但同樣受法例約束。
行業實況同出路
香港車輛數目龐大，加上法定檢驗（如周年檢驗同續牌檢驗）需求穩定，驗車員工作相對有保障。出路方面，可由前線檢驗員晉升為中心主管或負責人，亦可憑經驗轉往車輛維修管理、品質控制或政府部門。想入行嘅人，宜先累積汽車維修同檢驗實務，熟讀法例同檢驗手冊，再考取運輸署嘅授權資格。行業亦隨電動車普及而更新檢驗要求，從業者要持續學習。

The job: item-by-item inspection and certification
A vehicle examiner handles many vehicles a day, from private cars and light goods vehicles to heavy vehicles. Inspection follows a set order and standard: a brake tester measures the braking force at each wheel to confirm balance and overall performance meet the mark, an exhaust analyser checks emissions against the specification, and then lights, tyres, steering and bodywork are checked item by item. Defects must be recorded truthfully; standards cannot be relaxed to help an owner pass, because vehicle safety affects the public. Once the examination is done, documents are issued and records kept for audit.
The gate: Transport Department authorisation and practical training
A vehicle examiner cannot simply declare himself one; written authorisation from the Transport Department is required. Under the Code of Practice for Designated Car Testing Centres, Approved Car Testers and Responsible Persons must meet specified qualifications and experience, complete practical training and pass a competence test, and a centre must have a designated manager. The whole system rests on the Road Traffic Ordinance, and the Department monitors centre operations and inspection quality. This government-authorised, privately-run model means the gate differs from a civil service post, yet is equally bound by law.
Industry reality and pathways
Hong Kong has a large vehicle population and statutory examination—annual and re-licensing inspections—generates steady demand, giving vehicle examiners relatively secure work. Careers can run from front-line examiner to centre manager or Responsible Person, or, with experience, into vehicle maintenance management, quality control or government service. Newcomers are advised to build vehicle repair and inspection experience, study the law and inspection manual closely, then obtain the Transport Department's authorisation. As electric vehicles spread, examination requirements keep changing, so practitioners must keep learning.
