From May 1843, fever epidemics prevailed in Hong Kong and lasted until October, during which 24% of British soldiers and 10% of European civilians died; Pottinger and key government officials temporarily moved to Macau to avoid the epidemic and returned to Hong Kong only after the epidemic eased in November, and this disease was called 'Hong Kong fever'.
The plague lasted for six months, resulting in the deaths of 24% of soldiers and 10% of European civilians.
