1852年3月，香港政府訂立《1852年婚姻條例》，要求擬結婚人士在進行基督教婚禮前，須先將結婚通知書送交婚姻登記官。

In March 1852, the Hong Kong government enacted the Marriage Ordinance 1852, requiring persons intending to marry to deliver a notice of marriage to the Registrar of Marriages before holding a Christian wedding.

1852年3月16日，《1852年婚姻條例》獲立法局通過；該條例訂明，凡擬結婚而雙方或一方信奉基督教者，可按所訂程序及儀式註冊結婚。

On 16 March 1852, the Marriage Ordinance 1852 was passed by the Legislative Council; it provided that persons intending to marry, where both or one party was Christian, could register their marriage according to the prescribed procedure and ceremony.
