On 1 June 1873, the Caledonian, belonging to the British-owned China Pacific Steamship Company, set sail from Hong Kong on its maiden voyage with 641 Chinese passengers and arrived in San Francisco after a 26-day journey, setting the fastest record that year for the Hong Kong to San Francisco route.
