After nightfall on 19 August 1912, about 40 pirates attacked the Cheung Chau Police Station, seizing a batch of weapons, ammunition and over $1,000 in cash; they then robbed a pawnshop on the island, taking a large amount of jewellery and over $2,000, and finally fled by boat to Macau.
