The Tung Lin Kok Yuen in Happy Valley officially opened on that day; the building was funded by Lady Clara Ho Tung (Ho Cheung Lin-kok) and was the first Buddhist temple on Hong Kong Island.

In his report, British Royal Inspector of Schools Burney noted that government and subsidised schools in Hong Kong used mixed Chinese-English medium instruction with unsatisfactory results; he recommended strengthening practical English training to meet the needs of social progress and external communication, and urged the Hong Kong Government to review the language of instruction for Chinese subjects.
