On 25 June 1937, the Hong Kong Government announced a currency amending ordinance providing that all British silver dollars had to be surrendered to the Treasurer before 1 August in exchange for Hong Kong dollars of the same face value, and repealing the arrangement in a 1935 currency ordinance permitting any person to apply to the Treasurer for a licence to hold silver.
On 26 June 1937, the Education Department held the first Hong Kong Secondary School Certificate Examination, with 721 candidates sitting the exam and 423 ultimately obtaining certificates.
