On 20 February 1955, the Sai Wan War Memorial was completed and opened to commemorate the soldiers who fell during the 1941 Battle of Hong Kong.

1955年2月21日凌晨時分，上水石湖墟發生火警，全墟八條街道及約八成、即約300間房屋遭燒毀，造成一人喪生、六人受傷，受影響災民有4000人，經濟損失約200萬元，報德祠亦被焚毀。
In the early hours of 21 February 1955, a fire broke out in Shek Wu Hui, Sheung Shui, burning down all eight streets of the market and about 80 per cent, or roughly 300, houses, causing one death and six injuries, affecting 4,000 victims, with economic losses of about $2 million, and the Po Tak Tsz was also destroyed.
