亞洲足球協會主辦的第一屆亞洲盃足球賽，在1956年9月1日假香港大球場開鑼，賽事一直持續到同月15日才結束，香港隊最後獲得季軍。

The first Asian Cup football tournament, organised by the Asian Football Confederation, kicked off on 1 September 1956 at the Hong Kong Stadium and lasted until the 15th of the same month, with the Hong Kong team finishing third.

1956年9月28日，礦務總監威廉．基因因接受二萬五千元賄賂，遭法院判定有罪，並處以兩年有期徒刑。

On 28 September 1956, the Superintendent of Mines, William Gittins, was found guilty by the court of accepting a bribe of $25,000 and was sentenced to two years' imprisonment.
