On 3 December 1965, a football match between Hong Kong and Australia was held at the Hong Kong Stadium; dissatisfaction among spectators with the rough play of the Australian players and the referee's decisions sparked a riot, hundreds of police officers were deployed to control the situation, and nine people were arrested.
